It was fantastic to welcome the Orkney Drugs Dog Zoe together with her handler Kevin Moar and PC Cuthbertson to Westray Junior High School today. This is Zoe's first visit since 2019. They spent time with all our young people from the Nursery up to our seniors in S4. Staff and young people were very excited about having Zoe in the school for the day. Kevin spent time with each of the year groups explaining his role, Zoe's role, and why having a drugs dog is so important. He also spent time explaining to the little ones about the role of the working dog, and why it is important not to pat a working dog whilst it is working. They learned lots of interesting facts including how quickly a drugs dog can be trained, and what age Zoe is. PC Cuthbertson, Kevin, (and Zoe) held an assembly with the S1-4 pupils. They both explained about their jobs, and what is involved in their job. A couple of the secondary pupils wanted to know how to join the Police so PC Cuthbertson explained this too. Secondary pupils then were given the opportunity to ask questions anonymously via post-it notes. Lots of great questions were asked including; where is the weirdest place you have found drugs?, how many times does Zoe train each week/month? what do you do with the drugs after you take them from someone?, how do you find the drugs sent by post? what are some signs of a drug user? etc. Kevin and PC Cuthbertson answered all the questions, and included some stories from their jobs. All pupils who wanted to were allowed to pat Zoe, and she thoroughly enjoyed all the attention. She then was given the opportunity to run off a day's worth of pats with a run on the beach. Kevin and PC Cuthbertson have both been invited back, and we look forwarding to welcoming them to Westray School anytime they wish to visit.
